A Deep Dive into the design and construction of our newest auxiliary instrument.

If you have been studying percussion for any length of time, you know the struggle of balancing your budget with the need for high-quality gear. Today, we are taking a closer look at the newest instrument to join our family: the Overture Slapstick. Let’s explore how smart engineering and a percussion-first mindset can bring professional consistency to a budget-friendly instrument.

Superior Sound, Sensible Value

The Overture line is driven by a simple yet powerful concept: Superior Sound, Sensible Value. As percussionists ourselves, we know that players need instruments designed with a deep understanding of the art form, regardless of the price tag. We believe that percussionists making percussion instruments results in a better experience for the player.

The goal isn't just to make things cheaper; it is to make them smarter. By utilizing economical manufacturing methods without sacrificing the critical design elements we value as musicians, we can offer instruments that serve educators, working professionals, and students alike. This new slapstick is the embodiment of that philosophy—delivering high-quality sound at an affordable price point.

Construction and Aesthetics of the Overture Slapstick

When we talk about percussion instruments made of wood, the primary enemy is warping. A warped slapstick is essentially useless because the two surfaces cannot meet flush to create that signature sharp report.

To combat this, the Overture Slapstick is built using 12-millimeter Birch plywood. We chose ply construction specifically for its rigidity. Unlike a single solid piece of timber which might bow over time due to humidity changes, high-quality plywood is engineered to remain straight. This ensures the 20-inch by 4-inch soundboards resist warping, effectively extending the lifespan of the instrument. When you invest in gear, you want it to last, and this material choice is the foundation of that durability.

The Science of the Sound: Vents and Hinges

slapstick air vents

Have you ever wondered why some slapsticks sound like a dull "thud" while others have a clear, projecting snap? The answer often lies in air displacement.

When you slam two flat boards together, air gets trapped between them, cushioning the blow and muffling the sound. To solve this, we incorporated dual offset air vents. These vents are crucial for shaping the sound. They allow the air to escape quickly and efficiently the moment the soundboards snap shut. This results in greater clarity and that distinct, dry sound effect that cuts through an ensemble.

Furthermore, the action is controlled by a solid, matte black hinge. If you look closely at the Overture Slapstick, you will notice a slight space near the hinge even when the instrument is fully closed. This is not a manufacturing error; it is a deliberate design choice. Much like the air vents, this spacing facilitates air escape to ensure the sound quality remains consistent and sharp.

Comfort and Control for Every Player

The mechanics of the instrument are only half the story; the other half is how it connects to the player. A heavy, unwieldy instrument can lead to timing errors or fatigue.

When you pick up this instrument, the first thing you will notice is the handles. We crafted them from solid maple—a material known for being both strong and sturdy. However, the sizing is what matters most here. The handles are shaped to allow musicians with smaller hands to easily grip and manipulate the instrument. Whether you are a middle school student just starting out or a seasoned pro, the Overture Slapstick offers the control necessary for precise rhythmical execution.

Summary

We are incredibly proud to add this instrument to the series. It represents a professional level of construction—featuring warp-resistant Birch ply and air-vented soundboards—at a price point that makes sense. Whether you are stocking a band room or building your personal inventory, this instrument delivers high-quality performance without compromise.
