A Brief History of Our Castanets

We’ve been making orchestral castanets since 1997, and while some elements of the design have evolved, our core goal has remained unchanged: to create the best-sounding, most versatile concert castanets available. From the very beginning, we focused on durability, responsiveness, and the small but essential details that make all the difference for performers.
Revolutionary Castanet Handle Design

One of the most unique features of our castanets is the elastic-free tension adjustment system built directly into the handle. While our original design featured an elastic tension system—a major innovation at the time—we’ve since eliminated cords entirely. Why? Because they wear out, break, and frustrate players.
Our current T-shaped black flange system secures the castanets in place with long-term stability and allows us to fine-tune the tension in-house. The result? A perfectly responsive feel that works effortlessly across a wide dynamic range, from delicate pianissimo passages to bold, articulate accents.

Precision Craftsmanship & Tuning
Every castanet that leaves our shop has been crafted and matched with care. From CNC machining to hand sanding, we go to great lengths to ensure consistency. During sanding, we not only smooth the outside for a beautiful glossy finish—we also subtly shape the inside of each cup.
This internal arch is essential. When you look between the two cups, you should see a slight gap of daylight—this “mouth shape” isn’t just aesthetic; it’s what gives the castanets their crisp tone, quick response, and satisfying projection.
After finishing, each pair is carefully assembled by a skilled technician and tested for sound quality and feel before it’s packaged and shipped worldwide.
Wood Selection & Sound Differences

Our Pro Handled Castanets are available in two wood options: Grenadillo and Purpleheart. While both are premium hardwoods, each has a distinct voice:
Grenadillo – Known for a slightly rounder, warmer tone with a bit less surface tick. Great for nuanced, lyrical playing.
Purpleheart – Offers more articulation and extra projection, especially useful in large ensembles or louder passages.

The Redoble Roll Feature

Need to play a fast, seamless castanet roll? We’ve got you covered with what we call the Redoble Roll. Thanks to the angled end of our handle and the specific way the castanets are mounted, you can flip the instrument over and play a roll on your knee using rapid single strokes.
The physics of the design convert those strokes into smooth, consistent doubles—making it easier to achieve a natural, flowing castanet roll without strain.
