Dr. Caleb Pickering (BSP Artist) is an accomplished percussionist, composer, and educator currently serving as Assistant Professor of Percussion at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. An active international performer, Caleb has presented his original works at prominent global venues, including a featured solo recital at the Taipei National Bioinnovation Park Concert Hall in Taiwan, as well as performances at the American Percussion Symposium and Birmingham Symphony Hall.
As a highly sought-after clinician, Caleb regularly presents masterclasses, guest lectures, and clinics at institutions worldwide, including the Phonon Percussion Festival and the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod. His compositions are staples in the modern percussion repertoire, earning him recognition as a finalist for the American Prize in Composition. Beyond his teaching and composing, Caleb co-hosts the widely listened-to @percussion podcast alongside Casey Cangelosi, Ksenija Komljenović, Ben Charles, and Karli Viña. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts from James Madison University and maintains artist sponsorships with several industry-leading percussion brands.
The Pickering Square of Tambourine Technique
To make reliable musical choices on stage, Caleb uses a mental model borrowed from high school biology: the Punnett square. But for this lesson, we'll be transforming it into the Pickering Square. Instead of traits or genetics, this two-by-two grid organizes your performance options by pairing two fundamental variables: volume (louder vs. softer) and speed (slower vs. faster).
By analyzing your tambourine technique through this framework, you can instantly determine the most effective physical approach for any given passage.

Musical Decisions in Performance: Breaking Down the Quadrants
Choosing the right quadrant is less about rigid mechanics and more about prioritizing the musical demands of the repertoire. Let's look at how these choices unfold in practice.
Quadrant 1: Louder and Slower

This is your baseline approach for standard ensemble playing. Caleb advises younger students to visualize a pond: form a "duck bill" shape with your striking hand and place the "duck's seat" right at the edge of the frame. The motion itself is completely fluid, mimicking a relaxed snare drum stroke, a ride cymbal pattern, or a Moeller technique movement.
Quadrant 2: Louder and Faster

When a piece demands high volume alongside rapid rhythms, the classic knee-fist technique becomes necessary. However, contemporary solo literature often forces you to adapt this technique on the fly. For example, in Casey Cangelosi's A Cool Gadget or Caleb’s own solo work Shred, you may encounter high-speed, high-volume grooves where there is simply no time to flip the instrument over. In these moments, the smart musical adjustment is to keep the head facing up and play directly between the top head with your fist and the bottom rim against your knee.
Quadrant 3: Slower and Softer

Soft playing requires careful damping to avoid unwanted jingle ring. For slower, quiet notes, maintain the same fluid arm drop as a standard stroke, but let the base of your wrist rest completely on the head.
"It is almost like somebody super glued the base of our wrist to the head as a little muffler," Caleb notes.
From this anchored position, you make a musical decision on texture: use more fingers for a fuller, broader sound, or drop down to a single finger for a thinner, crystalline texture.
Quadrant 4: Faster and Softer

When you face an extended, rapid, whisper-quiet passage—such as the back half of A Cool Gadget—holding the instrument upright will quickly fatigue your muscles and compromise your dynamics. The solution is to rest the frame on your leg and lean it slightly against your abdomen. This recreates the ideal 45-degree playing angle while allowing you to rest both hands comfortably on the rim, executing ultra-quiet, rapid-fire finger patterns with zero arm tension.
What Do Lawnmowers and Finger Rolls Have In Common?
The finger or thumb roll is a foundational component of advanced tambourine technique, but it is frequently plagued by a drop in friction. Caleb compares executing a successful friction roll to pushing a lawnmower or a snowplow. If you stand directly behind a heavy snowplow, you can easily guide it forward using your body weight. But if you step to the side and try to drag it, you lose all your leverage.
Younger players often make the mistake of turning their arm or twisting their wrist as they trace the edge of the head. This pulls their arm strength away from the finger, causing the roll to sputter. To fix this, your forearm must stay directly behind the path of your moving finger at all times.
By placing your thumb directly against the first knuckle joint of your playing middle finger, you brace the finger and prevent the joint from collapsing or flexing under pressure. This creates a completely rigid, flat base that skips smoothly across the head.

Musically, this brace lets you choose between two distinct sound characters in pieces like Shred:
The Thumb Roll: Provides a thick, chunky texture that perfectly mimics the heavy guitar "chug" rhythms of a metal track.
The Braced Middle-Finger Roll: Delivers exceptional finesse, a slightly lower volume, and the agility needed to land perfectly on rapid release notes.
The Assisted Shake Roll and Endurance in Solo Literature

When performing Caleb's five-and-a-half-minute solo Shred—which blends classical concert percussion with a heavy metal audio track and double-kick drum patterns—endurance and projection become major hurdles.
To survive long, physically demanding roll passages without locking up your muscles, you can utilize the assisted shake roll.
Think of this motion like having a bit too much coffee; your hands are fast, micro-detailed, and highly jittery.
Place the fingertips of your striking hand lightly against the head, as if they are superglued down.
Shake the frame rapidly using your holding hand.
Press your striking fingertips against the head to create a subtle counter-resistance, acting like a spring.
This tension system operates by splitting the physical workload evenly between both arms and preventing your left hand from cramping.
This efficient mechanism shares strong conceptual roots with other renowned techniques in the percussion community. It functions quite similarly to the famous "special sauce" roll detailed by Black Swamp Educator John Parks in his Black Swamp Special Sauce Tutorial. It also aligns closely with the integrated hand-to-frame roll methods taught by Black Swamp Artist Gerardo Capaldo in his guide on 3 Tambourine Roll Techniques and When to Use Them.
In a loud contemporary setting like Shred, the audio playback can easily drown out standard soft techniques. During quiet sections where you still need your rhythms to cut through the track, Caleb suggests making a calculated dynamic choice: the tenuto piano stroke.

Instead of striking with a single finger, drop an open, flat "spider hand" lightly across the head. This low-velocity, wide-surface contact activates all the jingles simultaneously, generating a full, present sound that remains completely distinct without increasing your overall volume.
